Synopsis
Responsible Project Management (RPM) is a call for all project professionals to advocate for project outcomes that deliver value for society and the environment, as well as financial benefits to investors. In this session, we will explore what responsibility means in the context of projects. Conventional approaches to project management will be discussed to uncover the limitations and opportunities offered. Concepts from the fields of sustainability, responsible management, and systems thinking will be introduced and the relevance to projects will be considered. New competencies required by project people will be highlighted.
Participants will be encouraged to engage in discussion of their project experience, with particular emphasis on software development and technology projects. Participants will be invited to consider their own practices and how they might be adapted to improve their project outcomes and deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits for a better future.
About the speaker
Dr Karen Thompson, FSI FAPM FHEA
Co-founder of Responsible Project Management, member of the British Standards Institute Committee for Project Controls, member of the Project Management Institute Curriculum Review Committee and Adjunct Faculty at the University of Southampton. A career in information technology preceded academia and in 2017 she was awarded a PhD in Project Management from Bournemouth University. Her work at the intersection of sustainability, project management and education has won awards for teaching excellence, research impact, innovation and social good. She has been a judge for ENACTUS and East London Community Heroes Awards.
